We all know that exercising is great for you body as well as the fact that it releases endorphins and relieves stress. We want to take it a step further by connecting the mind and the body for when you are working out at the gym. Martial Arts is a great way to develop the mind body connection when you are working out. When practicing traditional Martial Arts like Karate, there is somewhat of a spiritual practice that is involved. You are taught to be in the present moment, somewhat of an active meditation. You are there to train and learn, things outside of the dojo do not matter. You are not worried about what is for dinner, or the email your boss sent you, you are focused on the task at hand to hone your skills. This same principle can be applied to cardio kickboxing, or really any exercise. Let's think about it from a practical stand point. If you are in your kickboxing class, and you are throwing punches at the bag and you are not focused, thinking about how you have to stop at the grocery store to pick up vegetables to add to your dinner. You throw a cross to the bag, and hit your hand incorrectly and really injure your wrist. Well that can be avoided by having that mind body connection and focusing on your workout. Let's take it even a step further. There have been so many studies about thinking of engaging the muscle that you are using when exercising to help activate that muscle to get an even better workout. Your mind is a very powerful tool, so connect it to your body and give it a try on your next workout!
